It lets you have a chocolate a day, then when you reach the end and you're all excited, all you realize is that there are no more fucking chocolates. Life is like that. Life gives you nice days to keep you going, nice things, and then you just know something must be going to come of it all, but no. And you realize that you've been so eager to reach the big prize at the end, you never really enjoyed all the little things, and now you have nothing, absolutely nothing.

Me Whining About Life )

Bought an 5 yds. of buckram today. My life smells like glue, but I'm looking forward to bonnets... :D

Just as a random afterthought, when I get my book, I'm totally making 1860s side-lacing shoes.

Somehow...

Madrigal dress: Sleeves

  • Nov. 27th, 2009 at 11:39 PM
As predicted, I sewed nothing on Thanksgiving, but I did sew today (after watching Ferris Bueller's Day Off on television for the 500th time).

And sleeves are actually the devil, I have decided. I think I should never make anything with sleeves ever, ever again. The only thing that prevented me from attempting to murder this dress and its sleeves was the fact that I retained enough sanity to know that you can't murder inanimate objects. I had to rip out and re-sew the sleeves so many times, I lost count. Believe me, I was cursing those things out as only a frustrated seamstress can do.

The lower part of the sleeve, the green linen, mostly behaved, except for when one sleeve fit and one didn't, even though they're both the same size. I made it fit, dammit.

Not the most exciting thing I've ever made, I know...Almost done, though! (See, I can make things quickly. When I have to.) Mom just has to figure out what shoes she's going to wear so I can hem the thing tomorrow, and then it will be done.
I gotta apologize. I went to the HUGE thrift shop we have last week but since we didn't intend to go there, I didn't even have my cell on me, much less my camera. It was so full of "The 80s called, they want their puke back." It hurt me with each step that I couldn't take pics. XD Maybe next time.

Here's some more stuff from the smaller store. Follow the trashy looking DivaStar.

Such a tiny little shop... )

Hopefully I've vaguely amused you for five to ten minutes. <3

party like it's 1949

I made a new dress! Check it out here.

I am so happy with my black friday swag.

  • Nov. 27th, 2009 at 3:59 PM
Spent way more then I should have but it made me very happy none the less. Went to Kohls first. We got a bunch of stuff we really didn't need but I was also able to knock out alot of gifts for others while we just stood around in-line. The check out line was the worst part. Time I was done with Kohl's I went right next door to Jo-Anns. I got all the fabrics I need for Christmas presents PLUS a few cute flannels for pjs. I didn't go crazy with that knowing I still have cut out pieces that need to be done up still from last year. But a pink cami with skulls just couldn't be resisted. And its pink!?!?!?! With coupons and the sales I saved $255. That is just made of awsome! If the site ever goes back up I am hoping to make a few more purchaces. The asian Legacy quilting fabrics were not in stock at this jo-anns. I am hoping it is still online.

Fraktur

  • Nov. 27th, 2009 at 11:48 AM
Frakturs are traditional Pennsylvania German illuminated documents. To see some originals, go to google. I finished the one for Mark and Jen a few days ago.

Hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving!

Looking for opening title sequences

  • Nov. 27th, 2009 at 12:18 PM
Hi everybody, I need some help with one of my uni projects. I am looking for historical movies/period dramas that have a title sequence that is not a part of the actual movie, where the credits are shown over graphics or similar, like they are often in TV Shows (House, Dexter, True Blood....). So far I have found one in "The Illusionist", "Emma", The Painted Veil and Mrs. Henderson Presents.

If anyone knows of any more I would be eternally grateful if you could point them out to me!

Other Things!

  • Nov. 27th, 2009 at 6:18 PM
Loooonnnnnnggggggg weekend a head of me!

I want to finish Buttercup. It is driving me nuts sitting unfinished!
I have a 1850s blouse needing to be finished...stupid UFOs! I shake my fist at you!

I would like to make my two Christmas skirts. Stupid Simple but they need to be done! I LOVE CHRISTMAS!!

I have some sewing to do for Liam's Christmas present (a Thomas snuggle rug), Cleopatra costume, and possibly look at some vintage dresses over the next couple of weeks.

Tomorrow night I am working in the bar at the theatre, I wonder if i will have hand sewing to take along?

And one more thing I will say! Gloating about what I wore on Wednesday, karma has cought me. I have an infection in my pirced earlope. Not happy. But that is the natural order, is it not?

Home...

  • Nov. 26th, 2009 at 9:15 PM
... and exhausted. I had a really lovely time though. The hotel was a complete dream come true; built in 1897 and appropriately furnished. No TVs. Afternoon tea every day. Befriended a charming British couple and we chatted about historical buildings and history in general (they live in a 16th century vicarage). Really delightful people, and it felt so quaint and perfectly Victorian to make friends in a hotel during tea. You know, the kind who end up touring the rest of the Continent with you because you hit it off so splendidly. ;)

The funniest moment: "You look like you ran right out of the 1920s!!"

Ah... okay... :-P

Tomorrow I'm going to Joann. Call me crazy, but the sale is huge and there are essentials I need. Like another bolt of muslin for mock-ups and various undergarment type things. And plain black cotton broadcloth for the Emma dress. I'm furthering my insanity by wanting new stays and a farthingale for court stuff. I'll even do them on the machine and use metal grommets, I just want them DONE. I think this is quite doable, but I wouldn't be able to get started until the end of the semester in two weeks. Then it's power sewing time! :D

Happy Thanksgiving to all my American friends!

Stays Progress :)

  • Nov. 26th, 2009 at 10:20 AM
When the bonnet I was working on decided to be silly, and on the off chance I would need portable sewing this weekend, I finally started back on the 1820s stays. I'm quite pleased with how they're coming out! Of course, you don't know how they're going to fit until they're fully on, but it's looking promising.

Anyway, thought I'd share a picture since I finally took one :)

Mostly sewn stays with a few drawings on them... )

Turkey & cabbage day

  • Nov. 26th, 2009 at 10:15 AM
Happy Thanksgiving Day!

Here's a turkey....

It's that day we set aside to try to remember the things we take for granted the rest of the 364 days of the year. Feeling guilty over our lack to recollect anything more creative than health and family, which are of course worthy of being thankful for, we try to jog our memory by stuffing ourselves till gravy comes out our ears. So loosen the belt, toast the pilgrims, grab a fork, comment on how the turkey is a lot less dry than what it was last year (though it is clearly not), and have a fantastic day of giving thanks.
